Welcome to the web site for Stephen Maurer Furniture Design. I design and build one-of-a-kind furniture and accessories. My thirty year professional history includes apprenticeship under an old restorer, work in a boatyard, cabinetmaking, millwork and furniture making. Now, I focus almost exclusively on furniture. It's the place that allows me to most fully develop highly refined, elegant and sophisticated concepts uninhibited by the constraints of walls, sheet rock, plumbing, electrical outlets....
A consuming passion, caught early on, has led to extensive study which has given me a firm understanding of furniture style and history. It has also provided a large mental library of outstanding design which inspires and
informs my contemporary pieces.
This same passion has brought me to teaching. I teach studio classes at Boston Center for Adult Education where I was thrilled to find my own spirit re-enervated by my students’ enthusiasm and energy.
As I try to show in my on-portfolio, my work focuses on form and surface. Detail is restrained and understated. Materials, often highly figured and exotic veneers, are carefully chosen. Construction is precise. Color work and finish are uncompromised. No part of the process is shortchanged. To create truly fine furniture requires the marriage of design, materials and craftsmanship.
I view it as my mission to provide my clients with unique and beautiful heirloom-quality furniture that will enrich their homes and their lives. Please feel free to contact me if you think that, together, we can create something beautiful for you.
